New York High Line Park Walking Tour

New York City, United States of America

This New York walking tour of High Line Park will inform and excite you as you take in the rich history of the neighborhood, which dates back to 1847. You will learn about New York's urban cowboys and High Line Park's history, walk through the historic Meatpacking District and Chelsea Market, and even see where the Oreo Cookie was invented. This walking tour of New York City is truly a unique and educational addition to your itinerary.

High Line Park was once the High Line, an elevated freight railroad track that connected trains directly to factories and warehouses. In 1847 street-level railroads allowed freight trains to utilize Manhattan's West Side as their main thoroughfare. New York's "West Side Cowboys" assisted in managing the traffic, however because so many accidents occurred, the city and state of New York and the New York Central Railroad constructed the High Line as part of the Manhattan West Side Improvement Project. After the High Line was no longer used, it was commissioned into High Line Park.

This two-hour walking tour of High Line Park takes you through the trendy Meatpacking District and into the Collier Publishing building, then along the 1.45 mile (2.33-kilometer) length of the park, which was once this elevated rail track. Your professional, knowledgeable guide will take you from the beginning of the Manhattan's West Side history through to the inception of the High Line, while identifying the unique plant life now inhabiting the former railroad tracks.

This region has been developed with public art, and the native greenery has been incorporated with the long forgotten tracks to create a spectacular, dynamic park. You will see magnificent views of the New York City skyline as well as the Hudson River. You will also have the opportunity to visit the White Star Pier, where the survivors of Titanic disembarked, as well as the old Nabisco factory, where the Oreo Cookie was invented.

Excellent guide, Bill was informative and good company. Very much felt this was part of the 'real' New York, not the usual tourist trail!

I visited N.Y and put in for a number of N.Y tours. I found this to be one of the better ones. Started in Chelsa met Deb, who took us through the markets and explained the history of he meatpackers area, then to the highline. Great idea for disused rail lines, made walking the line easy, deb kept us informed of various buildings and the architecture. Finished up near 34 st, which made it easy to return to hotel.

The tour was great. Fred, our guide, was excellent and went out of his way to answer all sorts of questions and gave us good context of the geography and economic changes along the river and throughout lower Manhattan.

Despite the rain we had a very enjoyable trip. The local guide Annie was great, lots of information and knowledgeable about the area. Don't bother having breakfast you can pick up some great food as the trip starts with a stroll through Chelsea market . We would recommend this as an excellent way to experience the High Line.

We met our guide on a very wet blustery sunday morning. The tour was very interesting and our guide sorry I can't remember her name was very enthusiastic about everything she showed us. A very lovely lady

We loved our High Line Tour. Annie was a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Highly recommended - it was worthwhile to go with someone who can give you a bit of the history and some of the things to look out for along the way.

Arrangements for meeting guide were terrible. We went to the High Line but we were supposed to go to a cafe to meet up. Nearly missed the whole thing which would have been an enormous waste of money and very disappointing.

Recently spent the morning with Annie our guide on the New York on the High Line Park Walking Tour._br/_ Annie was very well informed, interesting and fun and highlighted many points of interest around the Meat Packing District, Chelsea Markets and the High Line._br/_ The High Line now extends to 34th Street which was an added bonus. I would definitely recommend this tour.

While we could have walked this ourselves what a treat to be guided by someone as knowledgeable as Annie was. She was great! We wound up being in a small group of 4 and it was well worth the cost.

Loved it! Tour Guide, Anne, was great.. We had her all to ourselves..just my and my husband. _br/_ So nice to get an inside view from a real New York City resident. We like to take tours for that reason! It was a beautiful day and really fun!

We had a great tour with Bill. He provided a lot of interesting facts about the area how the High Line Park came to be. It really is an oasis of calm and beauty when walking n Manhattan and we loved it.

Loved the tour and Annie was a wonderful guide!! There is so much more info we wouldn't have known if we'd just strolled it by ourselves.

Our tour guide was Anna and she was very knowledgeable about the area. We really enjoyed the tour, helped by great weather, the High Line walk gives you good views around the area. We did feel though that the tour would have been better taken the other way around- finishing in the meatpacking district as we would have like to continue to walk around by ourselves and spend more time at the Chelsea Market. Definately recommended

Derek did a good job highlighting the High Line walking tour. The initial meeting situation could use some work, no one knew really what was going to happen. Once the guide showed up, we got it figured out. Just follow the light sabre

travelled at expense by taxi only to find out it was closed. Whilst the tour guide was pleasant and tried to make best of a poor situation. at -9 degrees and icy sidewalks, we had to abandon less than an hour.

The tour and guide was good, but would have liked to have spent the entire 2 hours touring the High Line and learned more about the buildings along side the High Line, plant life and excluded the Chelsea Market.

Review by:   Timothy A K,    October 2013 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The tour guide, Annie, in my view, spent too much time in Chelsea Market (approx 40 minutes) window shopping. When we finally got to High Line, the tour was better, but she did not know the history of the ten year struggle to get the High Line. She had good information on NYC in general, but she needs to learn more about the High Line and be able to talk and tour for more than one hour. Or change the time to one hour and keep the group on the High Line exclusively. Thanks.

Guide was uninformative and very subdued, a marked contrast to 3 other tours we took while in Manhattan.

Annie was great! The Highline far surpassed our expectations-a very close second to Central Park. So well done. NYC has so many reasons to be proud of their city. I will definitely visit the Highline on my next trip to NYC.

What an interesting and fun way to spend a morning in NYC! A whole lot of people cared enough to work tirelessly for years to raise the money and do whatever was necessary to preserve and repurpose this piece of history. Our guide was wonderful and knowledgeable. The High Line is a NYC jewel.

The tour guide knew little or nothing about the High Line. He walked ahead of the group in most cases and the only ones that could hear him were the two people on either side of him. When we passed over the Chelsea Market he denied that it was the market and never explained that it was once the Oreo cookie factory. He was mostly aware and impressed with the famous (?) people who resided or once resided in the buildings we passed. Of all the tour guides we've had, he was the most ineffective. We did enjoy the walk.

Very good - went to Chelsea market first which was brilliant. Our tour guide Annie was very informative and gave us some great tips for our stay in New York. Park was very busy but plenty of places to stop and rest and to have a drink. Look forward to new part opening and visiting on next trip.

Our guide, Annie, was great - a real New Yorker. Loved the tour of Chelsea Market that she gave us before the High Line Park tour as well.

Excellent tour! Since it was a cold, windy day, we had Annie D., the Guide, all to ourselves. She was outstanding and had a great knowledge of the early history of NYC. We could also pace the tour to a speed with which we were comfortable. We would recommend this tour to everyone and recommend Annie as a Tour Guide for every tour. This was a wonderful, enlightening and memorable day for us!

It is always good to use a local guide as you receive so much more information than if you had done this on your own. We enjoyed the High Line and the surrounding area and information we received.

We had a wonderful tour led by Annie Dawson. SHe was one of the best tour guides I've had, giving us just the right amount of information with amusing tidbits about the construction of the High Line and the city. She obviously loves people and her city. We look forward to taking more tours with her!

The tour was good. I enjoy having history and the relevant view at the same time. For me, there could have been more talking. Also, the guide frequently talked while walking, but without noticing that some people were outside of his range. Not dawdling, but unable to be within hearing range due to the physical facts of the moment

Poor - walk full length of High Line from 11th to 30th with very little information about surrounding area. When we mentioned this to the guide she said - "it just is what it is - not really much to say." One group dropped out along the way because of lack of information.

Bill was an interesting guide with a good sense of humour and very passionate about NYC however I am not sure it is necessary to hire a guide to walk the highline as it is pretty much mapped out along the way and signs explain the history.
