Capri Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

Visit the chic island of Capri on a day trip from Rome, led by an expert local guide! After traveling from Rome to Naples, cross over to the gorgeous island to see its highlights. Hop aboard a boat to the Blue Grotto if you wish, and enjoy a relaxing lunch in the hilltop village of Anacapri. Explore Capri’s main town at leisure, and then leave the island for your journey back to Rome.

Start your day with a pickup from your central Rome hotel or alternatively, start your tour at a meeting point in town, near Rome Termini Station. Travel south, and as you gaze out at the pretty landscape of Castelli Romani look out for Abbey of Montecassino -- a spectacular Benedictine monastery perched atop of a hill.

After a journey of roughly three hours, arrive in the southern Italian region of Campania and head straight to its capital, Naples. At the port, hop off your coach and board your catamaran or hydrofoil boat for your 45-minute crossing to the island of Capri – the jewel of the Amalfi region’s islands.

On arrival at Capri’s Marina Grande harbor, hop aboard a rowing boat and relax as your guide rows you around the island to see the intriguing Blue Grotto (entry own expense). The cave is said to have sunk further into the sea since prehistoric times -- blocking out most natural light. Rays entering from an underwater cavity combine with the trickle of light from the caves’ only entranceway, giving the water its magical vivid-blue effect.

Return to Marina Grande and travel by coach to the unassuming little village of Anacapri, perched high on the hills overlooking Capri town. Enjoy free time for lunch in a traditional trattoria here, and soak up incredible views of the sun-baked Bay of Naples just across the water.

Head back down the hill and explore Capri Town at leisure, perhaps visiting the elegant Piazetta (Piazza Umberto) or browsing the shops for keepsakes of Capri to take home. Meet your guide at the pre-arranged time, board your boat and return to your coach at Naples Port.

As you head out of the city, your guide will point out some of Naples’ star attractions like medieval Castel Nuovo, Certona di San Martino – a sprawling monastery complex – and the Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale). Relax on the journey north back to Rome, and finish your tour near Termini Station. Alternatively, make use of a drop-off at Via Veneto, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia or Piazza della Repubblica; simply let your guide know on the day.

Note: In extreme cases of bad weather, boats to Capri will be cancelled. When this happens, you will spend the day exploring Naples and the UNESCO-listed ancient ruins of Pompeii with your guide. No refund will be due.

I like the idea of this tour. Our guide Christina was great. We went on a Sunday and it was busy. I knew that there would be a long bus ride to get to Naples, and a boat ride to get to Capri, what I didn't know is that more than half 75 of the time that I was going to spend in Capri was going to be waiting for a bus to take us around the island. I opted for the blue grotto tour, which was nice but from others on the tour it sounded like the boat ride around the island would have been a better selection. Anyway, once we got to Capri, we waited for at least an HOUR not exaggerating here to get a bus to take us to the blue grotto. If I would have known this I would have just taken the ski lift up myself and met the group at the top! We waited probably 45 min-1 hr in line for the blue grotto. We were in the blue grotto for maybe 10 minutes. After that, we hopped on a bus to take us to lunch. The lunch was not good. I could have made better pasta using a canned sauce at home. After lunch we had maybe 5 min to either use the bathroom or shop because we were told we had to be on the bus to go back. So lets recap on what I actually did on this tour aside from the transportation... about 10 minutes of the blue grotto, and about 1 hour for lunch... and yep, thats all i did. Anyway, we were told we had to wait for the bus to get back down to the bottom of the island to catch the boat to go back to Naples to get the bus back to Rome. We waited HOURS again, not an exaggeration, it was at least 2 hrs that we waited for this bus when we could have been doing other things like shopping/sight seeing while the tour guides waited for the bus.... there was plenty of time for them to have re-grouped us. So after we got the bus back we had to run again not an exaggeration to get on the boat to head back to Naples. I do not recommend this tour. While Christina was awesome, and Capri was beautiful the only reasons this is getting 2 stars, you are wasting your time. Capri should not be visited for 1.5 hours of an entire day it deserves an entire day in itself or even more. If you have an extra day or two to spend, go there separately and do not take this tour.

The Capri Day Trip was probably the highlight of our Italian vacation. We loved every minute of it - even the bus ride! Our tour leader Christina was EXCELLENT - she is brilliant, a multi-lingual expert of the Gulf of Naples and Italy in general. She is very sweet and knowledgable - she can speak English, French, Italian, Spanish, and probably more languages. She made us feel very safe and taken care of. Do not pass up the opportunity to go to Capri - it is truly amazing and breathtaking._br/_ We didn't opt for the tour of the Blue Grotto - instead, we went up to Anacapri and took the Cable Car up to the top - what a view! We had a drink and took in the sights in this amazing hidden gem._br/_ Lunch was good, it wasn't your typical gourmet Italian cuisine, but for an included lunch it was certainly great._br/_ We took a boat ride around the island of Capri which was so amazing to do, and what a way to see the other parts of the Island and bask in the hot Italian sun! We had great company on this boat ride, it was a wonderful add-on to take part in. _br/_ Not to worry about comfort stops - we took one break on the way to Naples and then another stop on the way back to Rome. We could grab a quick lunch or coffee, use the restroom, etc. It was perfect! _br/_ The day was truly the highlight of our trip and we will never forget how happy, and thankful we were for visiting such a beautiful place. _br/_ Please, if you have the chance, book this tour!! I can guarantee that if you take the cable car and the boat ride on the island, you will have a wonderful time and bring home so many happy memories. _br/_ PS. Buy wine at the lunch place and bring it on board the boat for the boat ride - such a great idea that a few of us travellers did!

So I will start with the positives. Capri was stunning and I'm so happy I got to see it in the short time I was in Italy. Transportation was made simple and I didn't feel at all stressed getting to and from.

This is three hour bus ride from Rome and then a 45 minute boat ride. I was very tired from walking the past three days so I actually enjoyed the chance to sit down and rest and the bus was very comfortable. However, our time in the Blue Grotto was probably two minutes give or take. The tour company has no control over this though and I am just sharing for information only. The lunch was okay. We had around 1.5-2 hours shopping time. I loved the Blue Grotto and the chance to rest. This might be a better excursion if it just left from Naples rather than Rome. . .just because of the distance.

That day have no ship to Capri and go to Pompeii to instead. However, I have been Pompeii just one day before that Capri trip. So, I left the tour from Naples without lunch and go back to Rome by myself.

The tour was good the only bad thing is the food it offers, I went 3 years ago to the same tour and it was in the same restaurant but the food much worse would change the place completely, and according to the tour we thought the boat tour would come included but the same guide we charged an extra or probably did not come included, did not cover our expectations at all

We had 40 minutes of free time before a really bad lunch and then 40 minutes of free time after lunch._br/_ It was really poorly organized, one of the worst tours i have ever been on!

Plan for a long day of travel, but the view from the top of Capri is stunning. Great shopping too. The only negative was the 45 minute rest stop there, wish it was shorter to give us more time at Capri.

Most amazing day trip ever. Our tour ended up to be private since it was the last day the ferry was going out to the island before closing for winter. Sunny, gorgeous views! Photos to die for. Engaging and brilliant tour guide gave us insider tips, was endlessly fascinating. I am only sorry I did not post this sooner. Bar none, these photos from this day are the most glorious I have ever taken and probably ever will. Heavenly vistas at every angle.

Capri is lovely and I would recommend a visit there however not in a day trip from Rome. It is a 13-14 hour day mostly on a bus or boat. Tour guides were very adequate.

Very disappointed in this trip. 7-8 hours of just traveling between the bus and boat ride to get to And from Capri. Once there we we took a quick scenic walk, ate a sub par lunch, rode up the hill and then back down. That was it! The guide in Capri was dull and lifeless and barely spoke to us.

This day trip should be mandatory for anyone visiting Rome, it was absolutely amazing! There's an optional chair lift ride that was shouldn't be missed. This was by far the best day of my trip to Italy.

Capri is a beautiful island. The challenge is the large group 55 and moving them around. It's a 3 hour ride south from Rome to Naples. The tour guide was great and very talented - being multi lingual. However for the entire bus ride she would make announcements in 4 different languages so there was never any down time or quiet time on the bus. Maybe a handout for people to read and discern themselves? Upon arrival to Carpi which yes is beautiful after disembarking from the 1 hour boat ride from Naples, we had top wait another 45 minutes for a bus to take us to the top Anacapri where we had literally about 30 minutes to shop and explore before meeting for the included lunch. The lunch was very good and it was very nice getting to know the other day travelers. Since my table was last to be served desert/coffee we were a bit rushed and unable to finish our desert before paying catching the bus to return to the lower part of the island. Upon returning to Capri, we had about 1 hour to shop or take in the beach before returning to Naples. Had I known this from the start, I would have left the group when we arrived on the island and explored on my own, and had more time. For 6 hours travel time and 2 hours on a ferry I felt very rushed. We live and learn. The bus from Naples to Rome Termini was also a challenge - they say they drop you at your hotel, but I would have been the 11th stop at the Michaleangelo Vatican City and would have arrived home after midnight, so at that point I decided to get off at the Termini station where the Greenline office is and take a cab to hotel and save myself more time.

Capri was MAGICAL! Get Christine as your Guide and you cannot go wrong! She was knowledgable, multi-lingual and incredibly friendly! She also kept a great pace to the trip. _br/_ The drive to Naples was pleasant - we all had plenty of room in the bus. And once on the island, we all took an unexpected 1hr boat ride around the island which was by far the highlight! All of the grottos were gorgeous! Go on the tour, or any tour Christine gives, you will be very happy!

This was a good tour but please note during high peak season the time in Capri may well be taken up queuing for the blue lagoon and there is not a great deal of shade when you are queuing and the experience in the boat only lasts about 10 mins if that.

I think that this tour is just a poorly designed tour. The travel itself is exhausting. 2 hours each way between Rome and Naples in a bus and then 50 minutes each way back and forth to Capri. So nearly 6 hours of just traveling. I wasn't overwhelmed by Capri. It has some very nice views, especially if you go up the chair lift, but mostly just souvenir shops and cafes. The boat ride to the Blue Grotto was not running due to rough waters, so they took us on a boat ride around the island. The rough water made this a very uncomfortable experience. Several people fell and a couple got sick. I think if I were going to visit Capri again, it would be during a stay in Naples so as to avoid the 4 hour round trip bus ride.

First time visiting the island and it certainly made a impression. The view is breathing taking and the blue lagoon was magical. We were part of a smaller group so things were more manageable. The driver took the group down to the entrance of the blue lagoon and we were able to hop into one of the small boats with no wait time. The trip to the top of the mountain was the second high light of the day. The view while you're sitting on the lift can only be top once you get to the top as you get a 360 view of the island of Capri. This is a wonderful tour where you will definitely get lots of great photos.

I would give this one about three and a half stars as I have been on quite a lot of day trips and as a whole found this one to be just okay. The island and the actual sights such as Mama Mia bridge are beautiful but I didn't like how the trip was carried out. Multiple languages were placed on the same bus so we had to listen to the same speech at least four times and the English version was hard to understand. Do to this I found the guide to be a lot less engaging than my other day trips. It is also becomes a much longer day trip if any person is even seconds late or also in our case, you are dealing with multiple languages. You ride the bus for 3 hours to Naples then a 50 minute boat ride to Capri, so at least 8 hours of the trip is just riding around. You then have an option of either the very expensive Blue Grotto boat ride28 euro for what is about 5 min spent in the grotto or the Island boat ride 18 euro for about an hour ride. We did the latter and it was the only highlight of the trip. The provided lunch was the worst out of the 3 day trips we took on our vacation and definitely the worst meal I had in Italy. I expected the Island to be expensive since its only real form of revenue is tourism but be prepared, a simple key-chain or magnate will run you about 6 euro. My other family members enjoyed this trip immensely, I think I would possibly do again if it was with another company.

Capri is a gorgeous place. Taking this tour from Rome was going to be our only opportunity to go to Capri. Unfortunately, the bus ride is very long and the actual time on Capri is less than the travel time it takes to get there. The tour company was very professional and managed our time well. We were just disappointed that we didn't have more time on the island.

This was a long tour, and even longer due to the small accident we had on the Highway, but Stephano was awesome and super talented with knowing 5 languages during the tour. We didn't see the Blue Grotto because of High Tide, but we went on the boat ride around the island which was cheaper than the blue grotto and we got to see some of the other grottos and once you've seen one, you've seen them all. I do suggest this boat ride though, it was fantastic. The meal was a bit hectic and we were starving and there was barely an hour to wonder around on our own before we had to head back. Long bus trip, but well worth it.

I used Viator tours before and was very pleased but I have to say this one was a great disappointment. The guide was nice but for how long the trip was she did not share much information with us .The breakfast stop on the way to Naples was 20 min at a very busy cafeteria and same on the wasy back in the evening with most of the time spent in line for the bathrooms . The lunch in Capri was terrible the risotto was actually regular rice , not fully cooked but at least we had some time off after for about an hour. The Blue Grotto was amazing but if I were to go there again I would different option.

This was awesome! Capri was gorgeous! The only criticism is that there are a few stops along the way called bathroom breaks but were way too long and conveniently were at very boring tourist souvenir traps. I would have rather the bathroom breaks be ten quick minutes, leaving a little more time to explore Capri!

Capri is a beautiful place but this tour run by greenline tours was not worth the money. The tour guide Patricio from Greenline tours was not very helpful in allowing you to truly see the beauty of the island. The tour was not well organized and you spent most of your time waiting for buses and other transportation. You are mainly waiting around for people and they are constantly asking you for more money. You don't get any free time to truly see the beauty of capri, so I would highly advise you not go with greenline tours if you want to enjoy Capri.
