Semi-Submarine Cruise at Coral World Ocean Park in St Thomas

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Cruise the Caribbean waters off the coast of St Thomas and discover the colorful reefs and sea life that lie beneath on this 1-hour semi-submarine tour from Coral World Ocean Park. See turtles, stingrays and tropical fish in their marine habitat from your air-conditioned cabin beneath the waves, and learn about the different species from your guide. See the waters come alive during a fish-feeding demonstration and watch the onboard monitors during the ‘live dive cam’! Dock ashore to explore the rest of Coral World Ocean Park’s attractions at your leisure.

Head to the dock near Coki Beach on the east end of St Thomas to board the semi-submarine, a partially submersible vessel featuring an above-water upper deck and an underwater viewing cabin. Cruise out along the Caribbean Sea to begin your 1-hour tour; the crystal-clear waters surrounding St Thomas are teeming with colorful marine life, and your boat lets you see it all up close.

Take in panoramic views of aquatic life beneath the waves from the spacious 40-window underwater cabin. Cruising through the water in air-conditioned comfort, listen as your guide — a knowledgeable marine naturalist — points out the sea life, tells tales of local seafaring and teaches you about the history of the US Virgin Islands.

Explore tropical reefs abundant with marine life, discover ship wrecks and keep an eye out for turtles and stingrays. Watch the sea come alive with color during a fish-feeding show — the fish are so close you feel as if you can touch them!

Enjoy a fish-eye view of the seascape courtesy of the ‘live dive cam,’ providing a virtual tour of the underwater world. Watch the onboard monitors as a professional diver operates an integrated remote-operated camera, taking you closer to the action than ever before.

With no height or age restrictions, the semi-sub experience is great for all visitors. Each tour is different than the last, and you never know what may swim by.

After an hour cruising the Caribbean waters, return to the dock to end your underwater experience. Spend the rest of the day exploring Coral World Ocean Park’s many exciting exhibits and attractions as you please.

We arrived at Coral World , only to be told that Cruises had been discontinued until Coast Guard had inspected the boat. They wanted to know how I had ordered this event, when they had put it on hold on computer. I understand the hurricane last year caused much headaches, but when you are planning for your family to do an event, it was a little disappointing.

This was an extremely disappointing tour. Coral World is in a remote area of St. Thomas, accessed by taxi from the cruise pier and takes about an hour to get there, especially if Coral World is not the only destination. When we arrived we were told to go to a location to board the semi sub at 2:15. There were 2 other couples waiting. It was very hot and they did not have fans on. After a very long wait--far longer than the 2:15, the tour guide showed up, bringing a larger group of people. He took us on a very treacherous path of loose stones, up and down stairs to the dock, telling us how wonderful their new construction was going to make Coral World The boat itself was old and run down as is most of Coral World and the view of undersea very cloudy. Had not a diver appeared to disperse food, no fish would have been seen. We saw a few tropical fish, some small sharks and the sea bottom corals. Nothing beautiful as the video on the boat shows in vivid color!

Water was a bit murky due to rain, but the trip itself was very enjoyable.

Coral World, like most things on the island, is hard to find without proper street signs. The park is small, especially if you don't know to bring your bathing suit so you can buy the water experiences. The sub ride was good, but it's short and pretty crowded. Glad we did it, but we peobably won't do the sub again.
