2-Day Mt Fuji and Kyoto Rail Tour by Bullet Train from Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Combine a visit to Mt Fuji with a bullet train ride and Kyoto sightseeing on this activity-filled 2-day tour from Tokyo. Day 1 introduces you to Japan’s natural beauty with a drive up Mt Fuji by coach, a cruise on Lake Ashi and a ride on the Komagatake Ropeway. Experience another Japan must-do with a high-speed adventure on the bullet train (aka Shinkansen) to Kyoto, where you’ll spend Day 2 exploring this important city and its many cultural attractions, such as Nijo Castle and the Golden Pavilion. You can either stay in Kyoto on your own after your tour, or return to Tokyo by bullet train. Choose from four hotel options.

Featuring some of Japan’s most iconic experiences, from Mt Fuji to the bullet train, this 2-day tour packs a lot of punch in a short amount of time. Throughout the two days, you'll be accompanied by a guide or escort who can help with translation or provide any other assistance you may need.

You have four hotel options for your night in Kyoto; make your selection when booking. Please also specify if you prefer a single, twin or double room, and provide your accommodation information in Tokyo for the day before and day after this tour.

Day 1: Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Hakone – Kyoto (L)
Your 2-day tour begins with pickup from select Tokyo hotels or by meeting your guide at the Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal. From here, head out of the city by deluxe coach for the scenic drive to Mt Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Tokyo.

Start heading to the 5th Station of Mt Fuji and stop by a local restaurant for lunch before continuing your tour to Lake Ashi for a sightseeing cruise. End your adventure in this region with a ride on the Komagatake Ropeway, an aerial tramway on Mt Komagatake that provides views over Hakone National Park.

Next, zoom to Kyoto aboard the Shinkansen, Japan’s network of high-speed bullet trains. If the weather is clear, you may catch views of Mt Fuji during the ride. When you arrive in Kyoto, you’ll be dropped off at your selected hotel for the evening.

Overnight: Your selected tourist- or first-class hotel in Kyoto

Day 2: Kyoto – Tokyo, if option selected (L)
Enjoy breakfast on your own before meeting your guide to start your morning sightseeing tour of Kyoto. Visit the city’s famous historical and cultural attractions like the Golden Pavilion, Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle, noted for its gorgeous interiors.

Visit a local restaurant for lunch with your guide, and then continue your sightseeing with an afternoon tour to Sanjusangendo Hall, home to 1,001 images of Buddha; Heian Shrine, famous for its red exteriors; and Kiyomizu, a Buddhist temple with a large veranda built into a hillside.

When your afternoon tour ends, you’ll either be dropped off at your Kyoto hotel if you selected the one-way tour option or you’ll be transferred to the train station to board the bullet train back to Tokyo.

Hotel accommodation is not included for this night.

Terrific, well organized, and professional. Only complaint: we had no idea where our hotel in Kyoto was located -- and we managed to select the one farthest from the gathering point, making us last to our hotel and first to be picked up the next morning -- all at the highest price charged Hotel Okura. Also, breakfast was not included at this expensive hotel it would have been an extra 60 for both of us. Had we known more, we would have selected a closer, cheaper hotel with other breakfast options. We had no breakfast as a result.

Our tour in Kyoto was a disaster . It was one tour guide for 80-100 people with no earphones and microphone!! It was like looking at photos with no explanation. What a waste of time. Worst experience.

The tour is great and worth the money. One note though, it was a large group tour. The tour guide on our second day was not the best. She was running ahead of the group and when the tail end of the tour group catches up, she had already finished the presentation. Her name is Saico ( like psycho).

The Mt Fuji portion of the tour was great! Great tour guide and great itinerary The place selected for the included lunch was outstanding! Best meal we had in Japan. But the Kyoto portion of the tours was unimpressive. The tour guide was in a hurry to the point of having to run to catch up to her. Many folks just gave up and returned to the bus early. Although she had some type of voice enhancing device, it was difficult to hear her. The size of the group was too large! The place selected for the included lunch was a tourist trap. Subpar buffet lunch on the second floor of a local gift shop. The room was too small for the crowd and the staff encouraged patrons not to stand in line and just go and cut in line. It turned into a mob! Terrible food and service.

Great 2 day trip. Action packed. Unfortunately Mt Fuji was clouded over but Lake Ashi and Hakone were great to visit. Kyoto was amazing. Would recommend at least 2 full days in Kyoto.

We spent more time on a bus or train than viewing the sites. While the Mt. Fuji tour was shortened due to weather which of course is out of the tour guide's control, the activities we did do were shortened. And, we ended up taking the train that was 4 hours instead of 2 hours to Kyoto which got us into to Kyoto at 11:00 pm versus 8:30 pm. If I had know that, I would not have booked the nicer hotel as we didn't get to enjoy it or the location the hotel was in. Also, the tour in Kyoto included 4 temples once you have see about 2 temples, there are other sites that would have been more interesting. In addition, they gave us 2 hours for a terrible cafeteria style lunch in a neighborhood where there was nothing to really see so we waited about 1 hour and 15 minutes of doing nothing until our bus came to take us to another temple. If I had understood this, I would not have selected this tour. Very disappointed.

Sunrise Tours is absolutely amazing! I had 3 tour guides and they were all very nice, knowledgeable, and polite. They made it a point to provide exceptional customer service. The tour was very comprehensive and engaging. We had great food and plenty of it. The hotel was very comfortable and clean. I loved how they had Sunrise Tour employees at every train station to make sure that I didn't get lost. I highly recommend this tour because it's a great way to explore and fall in love with Japan!

Great trip but. Too many sites for one day - 3 in both morning and afternoon for total of 6. Kyoto needs 3 days to visit and understand past

We could not fault the organisation of this tour nor the efficiently and knowledge of all the tour guides. Even when changing trains at Nagoya from one side of a platform to the other a tour guide was on the platform to assist us. The hotel in Kyoto was superb and we saw everything we wishes to see. We wiill certainly use Viator again in the future. Well done!

We had two different guides. The fist day was really disappointing she was not interesting or engaging. She was difficult to hear and did not use headsets for off the bus tours can't even remember her name. The second day was much better, Take was much more engaged. I have to say that the tour was very organized and everyone was very helpful in getting us where we needed to be every step of the way.

This was a fantastic trip! Very well organised with well trained, knowledgeable guides! I would definitely recommend it. Be advised however, if you've been dreaming of seeing Mt Fuji your whole life avoid going during the summer. It's very unlikely that the mountain will be visible. Go in winter when the air is cooler and there is less cloud. The guides cannot control the weather!

We saw a lot on the tour but it felt rushed in places. This was OK since we had so much to see. We were impressed how well the tour was organized. Everything was on time, no problems with transfers. The guides could be difficult to understand at times, but staying close helped.

Review by:   Renee T,    September 2014 Review: 3 star rating: Worth doing
I would recommend organising a hotel pick up as check in for the tour is very busy! It took about 20mins for staff to check us in. There was a group on the same tour as us and their bags were taken straight to Kyoto, we weren't offered this. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, funny and spoke well. There was Wi-Fi on the bus, it didn't work. There are no toilets on board. We unfortunately couldn't see Mt Fuji, travelled in September, although we did enjoy our time at the 5th station. Lunch was included and was ok, nothing special. The rest of the tour was a boat ride and gondola ride which was ok, would've been better if it was a clear day. Towards the end of the tour we were taken to Odawara station where we met a guide, Toshi, who took us to the Shinkansen and assisted us. We took the train to Nagoya where we had to change, there was a guide waiting on the platform outside our carriage to assist with boarding the train from Nagoya to Kyoto. Another guide met us on the platform in Kyoto and walked us to our hotel, the New Miyako which was opposite the station, perfect as we were tired by the time we arrived around 10pm. The next day there was a full day Kyoto tour, the morning tour was fantastic and can highly recommend it, lunch was included and was yum! We didn't do the afternoon tour as we were recommended to visit Fushimi Inari Shrine by friends and this wasn't included on the afternoon tour so we opted to do our own thing. We then met another guide at the hotel who took us back to Kyoto station to board our train to Tokyo where we met another guide who took us to our complimentary hotel transfers. This tour is expensive and after not being able to see Mt Fuji, we were a little disappointed that we paid so much, in saying that, it covers Shinkansen tickets, guides who met us at every point, 2 decent lunches and a fully day Kyoto tour, we would recommend it and hope that you will be able to see Mt Fuji!

Enjoyed different views of Mt Fuji, from the drive up, to the 5th station, as well as from the lake. Weather was a touch windy/cloudy but we were still able to get glimpses/photos of the peak. The rail to Kyoto had transfers in it, but a guide met us at each stop to get us through the transfers. Late night into Kyoto, so make sure you pick up dinner before getting on the Train - To eat on the train. We stayed at the New Miyako Hotel, which is conveniently located across the street from the Kyoto station. So, after we arrived, a guide met us and walked us over to check into the Hotel. (Other tour members were staying at the alternate hotels, and they were taken to those via Taxi). The Hotel Room was recently renovated, so, was clean and comfortable. Although it's just for the night, then off to an early morning for the Kyoto tour, which meets at the Hotel Lobby. The Kyoto tour covered a lot of traditional/historical sites, and the tour guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. Then another train ride back to Tokyo, where we were dropped off at our Hotel there. All in all a good taste of Traditional and Historical Japan. Definitely recommend it.

Review by:   Philip D,    June 2014 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
Okay, I admit we were duly warned that the Mt. Fuji part of this tour was weather related, and yes, we went during the rainy season and of course we couldn't see anything. Here's my beef for this part of the trip. If the weather is not cooperating, this day is a complete waste. You spend close to half the day in a bus with only a few brief stops, hours apart, for sightseeing and if you can't see the sites, it's exhausting and completely useless. Add to that the fact that we weren't clearly told we wouldn't arrive our hotel till past 10 in the evening so forget about dinner. It was truly a nightmare, spending the entire day in a bus. The tour should make some adjustments for bad weather. Nobody wants to go in a cable car if you can't see anything. Perhaps a small detour to the town of Hakone instead of the cable car or perhaps just go to Kyoto earlier and scrap the useless parts of the tour when the weather is bad. The tour guide for this portion of the trip was comically incompetent. He was reading history in broken English from a prepared sheet. When he got stumped on the language, he simply didn't complete the sentence. He made us watch a documentary on Mt Fuji twice, sang a song, and played ridiculous music in the bus. It was so ludicrous that we taped his rant so we could share with our friends for amusement later. The second day in Kyoto was much better. The new tour guide was prepared and knowledgeable. The stops were well chosen and it was an efficient way to see this beautiful city. All in all, though, exhausting and a disappointment. Better to just do the Kyoto part.

Review by:   ELPIDIO L,    April 2014 Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
The tour bus was on time and the tour guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. The bullet train stops were so frequent that it felt like it was the local slow train trip to arrive at our hotel in Kyoto. It was tiresome but compensated by the different guides who were at the stop for our transfers. We were not informed about the stops of the bullet train going to Kyoto as well as going back to Tokyo. It had so many stops, felt disappointed with the reputation of the "bullet train"! The description online did not state anything about frequent stops. We were impressed with the nice limo service from the train station in Tokyo going back to our hotel.

We enjoyed this tour, although it got off to a shaky start as we had e-mail confirmation that we would be collected from our hotel, which did not happen. We therefore had to get a taxi to ensure that we did not miss the entire two days. We received no apology for this and in fact, despite our written instructions, it was intimated that this failure was our fault, which was frustrating. However, once we left Tokyo, our guide, Taki, was very informative and enthusiastic. Unfortunately heavy snow meant we weren't able to do some of the activities, but this was more than compensated for and it was clear in the description that this might be the case, therefore we were not disappointed. Lunch on Day 1 was simply a feast for the eyes. We were very lucky to get a view of Mount Fuji, as we understand the chances of this at any time of year are only 30%, so we were well pleased. The Bullet Train was a fantastic experience and we were met and guided at each stage of the tour by representatives from the tour company. We had paid extra for a 1st class room at Kyoto - this was disappointing. The room was cold and the bed uncomfortable. The staff were not very hospitable and we weren't made to feel very welcome, in fact, we were turfed out of the bar in mid-drink! The 2nd day touring temples, palaces and shrines was fascinating and we would recommend this part of the tour to anyone. The journey home by bullet train was fast and efficient and we were dropped off at our hotel at the end of the day. As the tour is quite expensive, we felt that just a little more attention to detail would have enhanced the experience for us, but overall, it was a trip to remember.

Honestly so much better then I could have imagined. This was my first time to Japan and travelling solo I was a little unsure and worried, however there was no need for worry as everything was taken care off. There was somebody to help every step of the way from waiting with me and making sure I caught the right train and escorting me to awaiting cars. All transfers were taken care of. Very well organized tour and ran to schedule, all of the staff were nice and had good sense of humor which made the tour a lot of fun. The only down side was we didn't make it to the 5th station as the heavy snow had blocked the road. Highly recommended

My wife and I had a very enjoyable and informative trip. We had great guides that had plenty of knowledge. One thing that stood out for us was we had to change shinkansen trains a couple of times BUT every time there was someone on the platform to meet us and take us to the correct platform for the next train. On arrival back in Tokyo we thought we had to make our own way to our hotel but again someone was there to meet us and put us in a paid taxi. Great service

Good way to see Mt Fuji by bus. But tour guide gave strange facts about Japan using old school posters. Frankly, it would have been better to see the view from the bus in silence. No real trip on bullet train - local stops - takes several and two train changes to get from Mt Fuji to Kyoto.

This is a well-planned tour which more than met our expectations. Although the first stop at Mt. Fuji was less than ideal due to weather conditions, this was more than made up during the cable car trip by which time the weather cleared up so that we could see Fuji in all its glory and on the other side could see as far as Tokyo. Our first guide, Marie was a delight and her English was good enough to be understood. The Kyoto guide needs some more training, both language-vise and in her ability to lead the tour. Nevertheless the Kyoto tour was comprehensive and enjoyable. The Okura hotel was splendid. The weather favored us again and we got some splendid pictures of masses of cherry trees in full bloom. We were impressed with the way the guide at the Kyoto railway station took care of us, to make sure we got onto the right car of the right bullet train and the way we were met in Tokyo and taken back to our hotel.

Generally that was great. A bit boring coaching trip to Mt Fuji, not to much actions. A bit disappointing as we didn't see Mt Fuji because of weather conditions. _br/_ You will meet several guides as this big tour contains from several small ones (trip to Mt Fuji, Kyoto morning, Kyoto afternoon). Organization was excellent, no chance to be lost. We were staying at New Miyako Hotel - nice place, close to train station and the main point of the next day pick up tours. Highly recommend to choose it. _br/_ What we didn't like - Kyoto places (palaces, temples, shrines) are crowded and 40 people in a group is too much.

The service was super, meet and greet at every stop. Amount of time at each location was timed appropriately. Except for the scorching heat which was out of anyone's control, the trip was great. The hotel could have been better, the beds were not comfortable. I'd highly recommend the tour, but if you can avoid the summer, it'd have been so much better, due to heavy traffic, a few original plans had to be changed.

All and all, I would encourage you to do this tour if if the weather is nice and you have a short visit to Tokyo but are wanting to see other parts of Japan. The reason I say this is because weather is a major factor with this tour. It was hot, muggy August and very cloudy. We couldn't see the top of Mt. Fuji except for a quick glimpse when the clouds parted. And the top of Hakone was also very cloudy. We took the cable car to the top where the clouds were so bad we could barely see in front of us so we just went back down to the lake. So needless to say, be sure to check the weather! We knew we might be risking it since it was hot August but our time was so short in Japan and we really wanted to see Kyoto. The Kyoto part was great especially if you don't really have time to spend in Japan. You get a very good 1 day overview of the top temples and sights. We only had 5 days in Japan so the tour allowed us to see not only Tokyo where we wanted to spend the majority of the time, but also other parts of Japan including the historical Kyoto. We felt satisfied with what we saw in Kyoto. The daytime tour guides were great with very good English. Not only did they both give the facts about the sites we visited, but they told stories and facts about Japanese life and culture which were very insightful. I thought the company provided a very nice touch in that they had guides meet us every step of the way while we were making our way to Kyoto.
